While we were all screaming that money already plays too big a role in elections, the Supreme Court's 5/4 decision allows more!  What can the average, hard-working American do in a "non-violent" way?  Big money can't spend if they don't have it.  Here are some suggestions.  If you have more, please email pandle@iowatelecom.net .  You can remain anonymous.  Make the subject line "Fight Back".  They just must be "fit to print."

  • Visit www.SaveDemocracy.net  Florida Congressman Alan Grayson has four bills in the House to fight this;  sign the petition.
  • Follow Arianna Huffington's advice about money;  move your money to your community bank-- make sure it is backed by the FDIC;  see Move Your Money
  • Visit Public Citizen and sign their petition calling for a Constitutional Amendment.
  • Grow your own, sew your own, make your own, pedal or walk or ride a horse where you need to go.
  • If you have to fly, fly Southwest--they don't make you buy a seat for your baggage.
  • If you don't need to buy it, don't; if you do need to buy it, barter if you can.
  • Take your tax refund and put it in a Credit Union.
  • Turn off your cable; it is possible to get local HD channels with the right kind of antenna.
  • Use only USPS (US Mail) to send mail and packages.
  • Learn to sing; take up reading again.
  • Use alternative energy whenever possible, especially for electricity, which currently helps support big coal AND big railroad.
  • If you can avoid high-priced specialists and big city medical facilities and non-generic medications -- do so.
  • Down size and de-centralize.
  • Turn off your tv--ask your bar and gym to turn off theirs (chances are they're watching Fox anyway).
  • Have a picnic with your neighbors; they may discover that your company is more pleasing than Glenn Beck's.
  • Form a "buying co-op " with friends and family; buy in bulk or wholesale and divvy it up.
  • Put up a clothesline.

On a more serious note, work at the local level to support a constitutional amendment.  Professor Raskin of the University of Washington College of Law says the approach must be three pronged:

  1.  A grass roots movement, organized, to amend the constitution stating that corporations are not people;
  2.  Congress should pass "pay to play" legislation.  Essentially, if you are a government contractor or take government money, you cannot use corporate treasury to support campaigns.
  3. State Legislatures would pass laws saying any corporation chartered in this state cannot make political expenditures without 2/3 vote of its shareholders.

Other ideas are petitions to corporations asking for political neutrality.

PEOPLE FOR THE AMERICAN WAY ARE ALSO SUPPORTING AN AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION.  Click here to sign their petition.
