DOT FINISHES MAJOR HIGHWAY CORRIDORS
In 1996, the Iowa Transportation Commission undertook a plan to complete 6 four-lane major highway corridors across Iowa. The plan included the Avenue of the Saints, the Des Moines to Burlington corridor, Iowa 330 from Des Moines to Marshalltown, Iowa 5 from Des Moines to Knoxville, Iowa 60 from Sioux City to the Minnesota state line, and US 151 from Cedar Rapids to Dubuque. The total miles of four-lane roads in the plan exceeded 700 miles.
This month the DOT announced that the six corridors are completed. The opening of the Fairfield bypass on the Des Moines to Burlington corridor is the final segment of the plan to be completed.
The completion of the "High Priority Corridors" took 12 years of public investment. In total, the DOT invested nearly $1.8B in the plan.
DOT Director Nancy Richardson said, "In celebration I want to thank all of the commissioners, former DOT directors and DOT employees, members of Iowa's Congressional delegation, our state and federal partners, contractors, consultants and suppliers, and Iowa's communities, businesses, and citizens. These and future transportation investments help attract business, create and retain jobs, make travel easier, and bring added prosperity to Iowa.
"Iowans, enjoy your road user fees at work."
